Has it ever happened to you when you've just clean up the entire house and suddenly you go down the living room just to find a fresh spot of cat urine? So you clean it again and you walk past the kitchen and suddenly, the reeking aroma of cat piss blunts your sense of smell. It goes on and on and on to the point it drags all your energy down to non-existent. Fret not, cat praying will be athing of the past. We will be sharing 5 ingenious ways to prevent our lovely cats from keep urinating that very spot you know very well are going to be the next target.
1. Use stones or pine-cones to cover the soil at your garden.
The neighbor's cat is consistently urinating at your small plot of garden. Among all the spaces at your huge lawn and the cat still goes to that specific beautifully amended soil at your little garden.
Just place some rocks or pine-cones around the area to stop the cat from doing it's business there.
The sharp and prickly surface will bring discomfort to the cat thus preventing them from digging and unearthing which they usually do when they're taking a leak.
2. Double tape along the rugs or carpet.
You can't be placing stones inside the house. So we come up with an indoor solution. If you ever notice when a cat got sticky tape stuck to its paw or fur, it will keep on trying to remove the tape all day long and it won't stop until it got it removed. So we use double sided tapes to create the sticky surface that cat hates so much to stop it from urinating at a particular spot. Just tape it along your carpet or couch and if you keep on exercising this method even after you stop placing the double tape, the cat will always remember to avoid urinating at that spot.
3. Place water bottles along wall.
This still amaze me that it actually works. We usually use 1.5 liters water bottles since the bigger the bottle, the more effective this method is. Make sure to fill it up with water all the way. Just place a water bottle for every 2 or 3 meters along the wall at your garage or your hallway and you will notice for some reason the cat are not going to piss at that area. We believe this happen because a cat doesn't like other cat to watch it doing it's business. So a faint reflection of itself from the water bottle make it believe other cat is there as a threat. Thus, prevents cat spraying.
4. Vinegar and citrus spray.
How to neutralize cat urine? Just mix a solution of vinegar or citrus water, put it in a spray bottle and spray all you want to any area you don't want your cat to pee at.
Well, there are cleaners with enzyme breaker commercially sold that are specially made to deal with cat urine problem but we are trying to d.i.y it out and find a home remedy to our situation.
You can water down the vinegar to 1:1 ratio if you find the aroma of vinegar too strong.
You can also use lemon, orange or lime grated peel to spray on your shoe rack or staircase. This will repel cat since most of them doesn't like the smell.
5. Spay or neuter.
This is actually the most common method recommended by vets. Since the benefit outweighs the disadvantage, we believe the ultimate way to prevent a cat from freely urinating around the house is to spay or neuter the cat. Spaying is for female cat and neutering is for male cat.
IT is just their instinct to mark territory. So as early as 5 months old you can bring them to the vet to get it done. We prefer to spay or neuter as soon as possible because we don't want the cat to develop a habit of spraying (marking territory by urine). Since we all know, cat spraying is a real pain.
Other benefits? For spaying, this will prevent cancerous breast tumor and urinary tract disease in female cat. While neutering your male cat will avoid testicular cancer and prostate problems.
sBonus: Maintain the cleanliness of your cat's litter box.
One of the most important thing a cat owner should have is the litter box.
That is your cat's toilet. Didn't we hate it when others didn't flush the toilet after they use it?
Just the same with cat. They need a clean litter box. Best practice is to scoop the clump everytime after the cat does it's business either it's number 1 or 2. Or at least do it twice a day.
We also have to make sure that the litter is 2 to 3 inch deep and not too full filling up the litter box.
When you have a maintained litter box, your cat will less likely to urinate outside of it.
Makes us happy and our cat even happier!
Our cats using the litter box!
See how our cat uses the litter box turn by turn. I'm so proud of them for being such a gentleman by letting one cat finishes it's business first and going for it after. They do it so diligently I just have to show it to you guys!
